Cypriot FM invites Egyptian counterpart to Nicosia

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikos Christodoulides, extended an invitation to his Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry to visit Nicosia in the coming period.

The two Ministers had a telephone conversation on Wednesday, in the framework of continuous consultations and close relations that bind the two friendly countries.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Ambassador Ahmed Hafez, stated that the two Ministers discussed various aspects of bilateral cooperation and follow-up on the results of the Higher Governmental Committee between the two countries at the Presidential level, which was held for the first time in Cairo on September 4, 2021.

Pope Francis arrives in Cyprus

Pope Francis arrived in Cyprus on Thursday afternoon for a historic visit to the island, the second papal visit in Cyprus following the visit of Pope Benedict XVI in 2010.

During a red-carpet ceremony, he was received by President of the House of Representatives Annita Demetriou.

Pope Francis inspected an Honourary Military detachment which included the three forces of the National Guard with the flags of the Vatican and the Republic of Cyprus flying.

Cabinet approves six additional measures for curbing the spread of the virus

The Government has approved on Thursday six additional measures in order to curb the spread of the coronavirus and allow society and the economy to function, Cyprus Health Minister Michalis Hadjipantela said after the meeting of the Cabinet.

In statements to the Press, the Minister announced the six measures. First, from Monday 6 December until 10 January 2022, all passengers, without exception, entering the Republic of Cyprus through the airports will undergo a mandatory PCR test.

ECDC epidemiological map captures increase in spread of coronavirus in the European Union

The spread of the coronavirus in the European Union and the European Economic Area remains high in the latest edition of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

Only a few areas in north-western, central and south Italy, along as central Spain, remain in the orange category.

The rest of the EU/EEA’s countries and regions remain in the red category (which also includes Cyprus) or in the “deep red” category.

Pope Francis sends messages of unity, says Church is an open space in which all are welcomed

Pope Francis sent messages of unity, patience, peace and compassion noting that the Church is an open space in which all are welcomed.

In an address Thursday afternoon at a meeting with priests, Consecrated Persons, Deacons, Catechists, Ecclesial Associations and Movements of Cyprus at the Maronite Cathedral of Our Lady of Grace, the Pope expressed his sincere gratitude for the warm welcome and said that he is thankful for everything they are doing in Cyprus.

He said that the Church, as catholic, universal, is an open space in which all are welcomed and gathered together by God’s mercy and invitation to love.

Pope’s visit and meetings in Cyprus send strong message of solidarity, President says

Pope Francis` visit to Cyprus and the meetings he holds send a strong message of solidarity in our common cause and joint objectives and are a testament of the continuation of the positive record of bilateral relations between the Republic of Cyprus and the Holy See, President Nicos Anastasiades has said.

Speaking at the official dinner Thursday evening, in honor of the delegation of the Holy See, he noted that the visit of His Holiness, Pope Francis, to Cyprus is a truly historic event and constitutes a great honour for Cyprus and its people.

He said that the visit comes at testing times for the entire world where inequality is rising, intolerance is prevalent among peoples and faith, human rights remain under attack and injustice is widespread.

Cyprus could be a workshop of peace in the Mediterranean, says Pope Francis

Cyprus is in a position to be a peacemaker, said Thursday Pope Francis addressing representatives of the Authorities, the Diplomatic Corps and the Civil Society at the Presidential Palace in Cyprus, during his official visit to the island.

“Cyprus, as a geographic, historical, cultural and religious crossroads, is in a position to be a peacemaker. May it be a workshop of peace in the Mediterranean”, he said.

Cyprus reports 538 COVID cases and 112 hospitalizations on Thursday

Cyprus Health Ministry announced 538 new COVID cases and 112 hospitalizations on Thursday. The positivity rate stands now at 0.61%. Total cases reached 135,503 and deaths remain at 598. The Ministry said that 46 patients are in serious condition and that 66.08% of all patients are unvaccinated.

According to the Ministry, 3 post-COVID patients who are no longer infectious, are intubated in serious condition in an ICU.

Today`s cases were detected from a total of 88,694 tests (rapid and PCR). Of the 598 deaths since the pandemic broke out, 384 are male (64.2%) and 214 are female (35.8%) and the median age is 75.8 years.

Of the 46 patients in serious condition, 18 are intubated, 3 are in an ICU and 25 in ACU.
