Brussels: The shortage of skills, the need for lifelong learning, workers' rights in the age of Artificial Intelligence, and affordable housing are set to be key topics at the EU Employment and Social Policy Council (EPSCO) in Brussels, chaired by Cyprus' Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Marinos Moushouttas.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Minister emphasized the importance of focusing on human capital, describing it as "our most valuable resource" while highlighting the challenges related to skills shortages and the necessity for lifelong learning. He mentioned that the adoption of the Council's recommendation on human capital aligns with the Cypriot Presidency's priorities of promoting skills, innovation, and sustainable development to create opportunities for all and safeguard Europe's future.
The Minister also noted the involvement of Cypriot Nobel Prize-winning economist, Sir Christopher Pissarides, who will share his expertise on Artificial Intelligence, focusing on creating quality jobs and protecting workers' rights. Moushouttas remarked that AI could significantly support citizens in adapting to new labor market conditions by providing necessary skills and infrastructure.
Furthermore, the Council will address the pressing issue of affordable housing. Moushouttas described it as "a crucial and multifaceted matter for all European citizens," which requires immediate and effective solutions due to evolving challenges. He mentioned that the Council would facilitate an exchange of views and best practices to develop targeted housing policies informed by the current demographic landscape.
The Minister concluded by underscoring that Europe's economic strength should be paired with social progress and the creation of quality jobs.
