Limassol: Mr Manish, High Commissioner of India to Cyprus, and Professor Philippos Pouyioutas, Rector of the University of Nicosia, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the establishment of a Chair of Indian Studies at the University of Nicosia. This post will be the first Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Chair hosted by a university in Cyprus and will be jointly supported by the University of Nicosia and ICCR.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the signing ceremony took place at the Park Lane Hotel in Limassol, just before the ‘Cyprus-India Roundtable Discussion: Advancing Strategic Economic Partnership’. This event was attended by President Nikos Christodoulides and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit of Prime Minister Modi to Cyprus underscored the diplomatic, cultural, and economic connections between the two nations, which are based on shared values such as democracy, pluralism, and respect for human rights.
During the signing, High Commissioner Manish described the next steps, stating that ICCR and the University of Nicosia will collaborate to select the inaugural professor for the Chair. Rector Pouyioutas expressed appreciation for the partnership, highlighting that the Chair will offer the University of Nicosia community, as well as the citizens of Cyprus, an opportunity to engage with India’s cultural and civilizational heritage. This initiative aims to further strengthen the ties between the people of Cyprus and India.
