Nicosia: A significant step in fostering cultural and educational ties between India and Cyprus was taken with the establishment of a Chair of Indian Studies at the University of Nicosia. The High Commissioner of India to Cyprus, Shri Manish, and Professor Philippos Pouyioutas, Rector of the University of Nicosia, formalized this initiative by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Sunday.
According to Cyprus News Agency, this marks the first Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) Chair to be hosted by a university in Cyprus. The initiative will receive joint support from the University of Nicosia and the ICCR, emphasizing the collaborative effort in promoting Indian culture and academia.
The MoU signing was conducted prior to the ‘Cyprus-India Roundtable Discussion: Advancing Strategic Economic Partnership’, which saw participation from President Nikos Christodoulides and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This backdrop highlights the broader strategic engagement between the two nations.
High Commissioner Manish highlighted that the ICCR, in collaboration with the University of Nicosia, will oversee the selection of the Chair Inaugural Professor. This role is expected to enhance academic and cultural exchanges, further deepening the bilateral relationship.
Rector Pouyioutas expressed gratitude for the collaboration, noting that the Chair will offer the University of Nicosia community, as well as the citizens of Cyprus, an opportunity to engage with the rich culture and civilization of India. This initiative is anticipated to strengthen the ties between the people of India and Cyprus, fostering mutual understanding and appreciation.
