UN Reaffirms Unchanged Stance on Cyprus Amid Photo Controversy

The united nations: clarified Monday that no change in its longstanding position on the Cyprus should be inferred from a photograph of a meeting the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo had with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, on the margins of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum in Trkiye.

According to Cyprus News Agency, UN Spokesperson St©phane Dujarric was responding to a question about the flags of the UN and the "turkish republic of northern Cyprus," an illegal entity not recognized by the international community, on the table where the meeting took place.

Dujarric stated that DiCarlo "was indeed at the Anatolia Diplomacy Forum" and that "the picture that has been seen reflects the setup at the meeting venue." He emphasized, "Let's be clear, it does not signify any change in the UN's position on the Cyprus issue."

He further clarified that "our position remains guided by the relevant Security Council resolutions" and that the UN "continues to support efforts towards a comprehensive and sustainable settlement on the island within the established framework."

Cyprus has been divided since the 1974 illegal invasion and occupation of the island. Numerous rounds of UN-backed talks to reunite the island under a federal roof have not yielded results.
