Nicosia: UK Minister for the Constitution and European Union Relations, Nick Thomas-Symonds, marked a 'historic moment' as he became the first UK Minister invited to the informal European Affairs Council since Brexit. The event took place in Nicosia at the 'Filoxenia' Conference Centre, under the presidency of Cyprus.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Thomas-Symonds expressed the significance of this occasion upon his arrival, emphasizing that it was a pivotal moment for the UK to re-engage with European partners post-Brexit. He highlighted the importance of collaboration, particularly in the face of growing foreign interference in democracies and global instability.
Thomas-Symonds also reflected on his previous visit to Cyprus in November, during which he discussed enhancing security and economic cooperation. He reiterated the UK's commitment to strengthening ties with Europe, stating that this is not a time to erect barriers but rather to work collaboratively with like-minded partners.
Reaffirming the stance of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Thomas-Symonds conveyed the government's determination to position the UK at the core of European affairs. He concluded by underscoring that shared challenges are more effectively addressed through united efforts.
