TSO Head Announces Upcoming Meetings for Energy Storage Facilities in Cyprus

Nicosia: The first meetings with the contractor for the project aimed at providing and commissioning three energy storage facilities in key locations of Cyprus' Transmission System are set to occur this month, with the total project cost estimated at £50 million.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Transmission System Operator (TSO) Head, Stavros Stavrinos, stated that the initiative seeks to promptly begin the necessary implementation works. These facilities are expected to aid in stabilizing the electrical system, reducing power generation cuts from Renewable Energy Sources (RES), and increasing RES penetration in the system.

Stavrinos clarified that the £50 million cost will be spread over a ten-year period rather than paid in full immediately. He elaborated to CNA that after completing public procurement and licensing procedures, the TSO has successfully awarded an international tender for the project's supply and commissioning at strategic locations.

As per a decision made by the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) in 2025, Stavrinos detailed that two of the three facilities will each have a capacity of 40 MW/160 MWh, while the third will feature a capacity of 40 MW/80 MWh, along with grid-forming functionality.

Stavrinos emphasized that this project signifies the introduction of advanced central storage technologies into the Transmission System, allowing it to acquire substantial experience and expertise in managing such systems. This is particularly important for providing ancillary services and enhancing the system's security and stability.

He assured that the TSO, working alongside the contractor, will endeavor to ensure that the systems operate according to the planned schedule.
