Nicosia: Temperatures will remain high until next Friday, meteorological officer Matthaios Papadakis has informed CNA, noting that they will rise to around 43 degrees Celsius inland until Wednesday.
According to Cyprus News Agency, temperatures will be significantly higher than the average for this time of year. Papadakis noted that Cyprus has not experienced temperatures at the “orange” level for so many consecutive days in a long time. The highest temperature recorded in Cyprus this summer was on July 24, when it reached 44.7 degrees Celsius.
The Meteorological Department has issued an orange warning for extreme maximum temperatures on Saturday, effective from 11:00 to 17:00. The maximum temperature inland is expected to reach around 43 degrees Celsius, while in the higher mountains it will be around 34 degrees Celsius.
The Forestry Department has issued a red alert for Saturday due to the risk of forest fires breaking out and spreading. It emphasized that starting a fire is a crime carrying severe penalties, urging the public to avoid actions that could potentially cause a fire. If anyone notices smoke or fire, they are advised to call 1407 (Forest Department) or 112 (Fire Department) immediately.
In addition, the Civil Defence has issued recommendations to minimize the negative effects of extreme temperatures. It advises avoiding unnecessary travel and heavy physical work in the sun, sunbathing, prolonged walking or running in the sun, and crowded places. It also recommends wearing cool, comfortable, light-coloured clothing, a hat, and good-quality sunglasses that protect against the sun’s glare.
The Civil Defence suggests eating small, light meals rich in fruits and vegetables, drinking plenty of water and fruit juices, and avoiding alcoholic beverages and sudden changes in temperature. People should use artificial ventilation (fans) or air conditioning and consult a doctor for any health concerns. Furthermore, the Civil Defence advises taking care of elderly or vulnerable relatives or acquaintances.
