Strong Ties Between Cyprus and Lebanon Highlighted During Leaders’ Meeting in Nicosia

Nicosia: Bilateral relations, regional developments, and EU-Lebanese relations were key topics discussed during a meeting between Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and his Lebanese counterpart, Joseph Aoun, who was on a one-day official visit to Cyprus.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides emphasized the importance of the meeting, noting that they deliberated on regional developments affecting both nations, the enhancement of bilateral relations, and Lebanon’s interactions with the European Union. He expressed eagerness to host President Aoun in Cyprus in April 2026 during an informal summit of regional leaders with the EU.

President Aoun highlighted the enduring ties between the two countries, stating that the Mediterranean unites them. He underscored the historical role of Cyprus and Lebanon as points of stability and peace. President Christodoulides reciprocated the warm hospitality he received in Beirut and emphasized the significance of Aoun’s visit, marking the first visit of a Lebanese President to Cyprus in 15 years.

The Cypriot leader stressed the enduring friendship between Cyprus and Lebanon, which has been pivotal for their future, fostering cooperation and realizing a shared vision for both countries and the region. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in trade, tourism, energy, defense, and security, alongside addressing shared regional challenges.

President Christodoulides reaffirmed Cyprus’s role as a strong advocate for strengthening Lebanon-EU relations, positioning Cyprus as a crucial partner in this endeavor. He announced initiatives to enhance these ties during Cyprus’s EU presidency. The visit also featured discussions on recent regional developments and the importance of Lebanon’s stability and prosperity for Cyprus and the EU.

The leaders also addressed EU-Lebanon relations, with Cyprus acting as a communication channel and supporter of developing Lebanon-EU strategic dialogue. A significant funding package of one billion euros for Lebanon was announced, highlighting Cyprus’s supportive role in the region.

President Christodoulides reiterated Cyprus’s commitment to Lebanon’s stability and security, voicing support for Lebanon’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. He emphasized the importance of implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1701 and the Ceasefire Agreement of November 2024.

The Cypriot President also highlighted Cyprus’s efforts to de-escalate regional tensions, citing a recent five-party meeting in Paris. He expressed hope for positive outcomes in Gaza and reaffirmed Cyprus’s commitment to international law.

President Aoun echoed the sentiment of strong historical ties between Cyprus and Lebanon, emphasizing shared goals and challenges. He noted the importance of collaboration and mutual support, highlighting the nations’ roles as beacons of stability.

Following the meeting, the leaders visited the Nicosia Municipality and walked along the ceasefire line. President Christodoulides hosted a lunch in President Aoun’s honor, further cementing the close relationship between the two countries. Cyprus remains divided since 1974 due to the Turkish invasion and occupation of its northern part.
