Nicosia: Simple measures by the general population can be very effective against the West Nile virus, Dr. Petros Karayiannis, professor of microbiology, told the Cyprus News Agency. He appeared reassuring in relation to the virus, noting that there does not appear to be widespread transmission in Cyprus at this time.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Dr. Karayiannis stated that people over 60, especially those with underlying health issues, may experience severe symptoms such as encephalitis and meningitis, as the virus targets the central nervous system. He advised the public, not just the elderly or those with existing health conditions, to wear long-sleeved clothing and use insect repellents, particularly when outdoors and in areas with stagnant water. He emphasized the importance of eliminating stagnant water in any containers at home, as they serve as breeding grounds for mosquitoes that transmit the virus.
Dr. Karayiannis also addressed hunters, urging them to wear protective clothing and use insect repellent while in hunting areas, as mosquitoes are most active in the evening and early morning hours. He noted that no specific measures are needed at airports since the virus is primarily spread by birds, particularly corvids, and mosquitoes contract the virus from wild birds.
He advised against approaching dead birds if found suddenly, as this could signify an issue. He highlighted that open areas with stagnant water, including dams, are potential hotspots for mosquito breeding, although water agitation and the presence of fish can mitigate this risk. Dr. Karayiannis recommended spraying in areas like drying salt marshes and riverbeds that have collected water from recent rains.
Dr. Karayiannis also commented on the impact of the climate crisis, noting that changing weather conditions could exacerbate the situation in future years. He reassured the public that symptoms are generally mild for most people, but urged citizens experiencing flu-like symptoms, severe muscle pains, or rashes to consult a doctor. He mentioned that the Health Ministry has protocols in place to manage cases of the virus.
