Nicosia: A total of 17 bounced cheques, worth pound 47,091, were recorded in the first month of 2026, according to data published on Wednesday by the Central Bank of Cyprus (CBC) regarding entries in the preliminary list of the Central Information Registry (CIR) for issuers of bounced cheques.
According to Cyprus News Agency, for the whole of 2025, 213 bounced cheques with a total value of pound 630,249 were entered in the CIR's preliminary list. In January 2025, a total of 16 cheques worth pound 42,062 were recorded, indicating a slight increase in the number of incidents in January 2026.
The CBC data also revealed that the total number of individuals and legal entities entered in January 2026 in the CIR's preliminary list stood at 13, of whom 9 were legal entities and 4 were natural persons.
Moreover, the CBC mentioned that the total number of persons entered in the CIR in January 2026 stood at 10, of whom 5 concerned legal entities and 5 were natural persons controlling legal entities, with no natural person being entered.
In comparison, January 2025 saw a total of 6 persons entered in the CIR, comprising 2 legal entities, 2 natural persons controlling legal entities, and 2 natural persons.
