Risk of Wildfires at ‘Red Alert’ Says Forests Department

Nicosia: The Forests Department has issued a warning that the risk of wildfires and the spread of forest fires will be at a “red alert” level on Thursday and appealed to the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid activities or actions that could potentially cause a fire.

According to Cyprus News Agency, starting a fire, according to the relevant legislation, constitutes a criminal offence punishable by strict penalties. Additionally, if smoke or fire is detected, the public is urged to immediately call 1407 (Forest Department) or 112 (Fire Service) to report the incident.

The Forests Department has also expressed deep concern over the ongoing occurrence of fires caused by the use of tools that generate heat, flames, or sparks during operation. In a recent statement, they highlighted that complaints have been filed against those responsible for these incidents.

The Forests Department reminded the public that from June 1 to September 30, using heat, flame, or spark-producing tools outdoors within state forests or within 2 km of their boundary requires a permit. Violations can lead to a pound 2,000 fine, and causing a fire nearby is a serious offence, punishable by up to 12 years in prison, pound 100,000 fine, or both.
