Brussels: Strategic autonomy is the necessary next step in the European integration process, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna stated. Speaking about the recent extraordinary European Council, she highlighted the EU's unity and resolve, demonstrating its commitment to international legality.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Raouna, who is presenting the Cyprus EU Presidency program at the General Affairs Council, emphasized Cyprus's commitment to delivering tangible results during its presidency. She expressed gratitude to Poland and Denmark, the Trio Presidency partners, for their cooperation and contributions to ensuring continuity and cohesion.
Raouna noted that the current General Affairs Council follows discussions on transatlantic relations at the extraordinary European Council. She underscored the EU's commitment to upholding international legality and the principles of territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence, which resonate strongly with Cyprus, a nation still experiencing occupation and sovereignty violations.
On the topic of European strategic autonomy, Raouna stressed its importance as the next step in European integration, highlighting the need for the EU to act independently when necessary while remaining a strong partner. She described transatlantic relations as indispensable and called for continued dialogue and diplomacy.
Raouna outlined the goals of the Cyprus Presidency amidst geopolitical developments, aiming for a more autonomous and globally open European Union. She emphasized the importance of adapting to geopolitical changes and maintaining focus on the presidency's objectives.
Discussing the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency, Raouna highlighted the significance of negotiating the new Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) and the Omnibus legislation for European competitiveness. She also mentioned the importance of enlargement, citing Montenegro's progress and the need for a credible enlargement agenda.
Raouna described the rule of law as fundamental to the EU, mentioning the upcoming rule of law dialogue with four Member States. She reaffirmed the necessity of Member States upholding the rule of law, especially concerning enlargement partners.
Additionally, Raouna expressed intentions to advance cooperation with the UK and other countries, and discussed the European Democracy Shield as a response to misinformation and hybrid threats across the EU. She reiterated the EU's commitment to addressing these challenges.
Concluding her remarks, Raouna assured that the Cyprus Presidency would work diligently to advance the common European agenda, while also extending condolences to the victims of a train accident near Cordoba.
