President to Contact von der Leyen on FMD Outbreak

Nicosia: President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides will contact the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, regarding the foot-and-mouth disease in Cyprus, following Sunday's meeting at the Presidential Palace, where, as he stated, they came up with some specific actions.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the President indicated his intention to reach out to von der Leyen while attending an event at a school in Larnaka. In response to journalists' inquiries about communication with the European Commission concerning the FMD outbreak, the President confirmed ongoing contacts with the Commission and his plan to personally engage with its President. He elaborated on a meeting held the previous day with farmers and stakeholders, where they identified specific actions to be pursued. This agenda includes establishing contact with the Commission's President.

On Sunday, a meeting presided over by President Christodoulides brought together stakeholders impacted by the outbreak.

The Government Spokesman described the meeting as a comprehensive review of the situation, leading to decisions on specific measures across four directions, with immediate implementation.

According to the Spokesman, the President's direct communication with von der Leyen will focus on discussing strategies to manage the emerging situation. He emphasized the collective goal of safeguarding and enhancing the primary sector of the country, alongside its export capabilities.

The Spokesman also noted the government's commitment to supporting affected parties and announced a forthcoming meeting later this week under the President's leadership with relevant stakeholders.
