New york: It was an interesting meeting, President Nikos Christodoulides said after attending a dinner at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The dinner, hosted by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, was part of an informal gathering focused on the Cyprus issue, involving heads of delegations.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the dinner took place between 19:00 and 20:00 New York time, but President Christodoulides left the venue shortly after 21:00. His departure followed the exits of the Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, and Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan. When asked about the dinner, President Christodoulides described it as an “interesting first discussion” and expressed anticipation for the developments in the following days.
The President noted that some participants stayed later due to the engaging nature of the discussion. The dinner saw the presence of key figures, including Guterres, Christodoulides, the Turkish Cypriot leader, Greece’s and Turkey’s Foreign Ministers, and the
UK’s Minister of State for Europe. On the UN side, important attendees included UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, UNSG personal envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin, and UNSG Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP), Colin Stewart.
Earlier in the day, President Christodoulides met with Greece’s Foreign Minister, George Gerapetritis. He is scheduled to meet with the UK’s Minister of State for Europe, Stephen Doughty, on Thursday.
