Paris: President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides announced a historic advancement in Cyprus-France relations following the signing of a Strategic Partnership Agreement with French President Emmanuel Macron. The agreement, signed at the Elysee Palace, marks a significant enhancement in bilateral ties between the two nations.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides emphasized the importance of this partnership, noting that France is a crucial strategic ally for Cyprus. He highlighted that this agreement further cements their relationship, especially as Cyprus prepares to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in a mere 16 days.
President Christodoulides expressed gratitude towards President Macron and his team for productive discussions on various fronts, including the ongoing support for Ukraine, security and defense strategies, and enhancing the European Union's social cohesion. The dialogue also covered regional developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, an area both leaders agreed holds significant opportunities for Europe.
The Strategic Joint Declaration aims to elevate Cyprus-France cooperation, focusing on vital areas such as energy, defense, education, and innovation. Christodoulides described it as a "clear political statement" that outlines a shared vision and concrete priorities for the future.
Christodoulides also underscored France's role as an invaluable partner in defense and energy, citing Total's presence in Cyprus' exclusive economic zone and cooperation between the countries' defense ministries. The two nations are working towards a Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA) to formalize defense collaborations.
The Cypriot President thanked France for supporting Cyprus's efforts to join the Schengen Area by 2026, marking another milestone in their bilateral relationship. Additionally, he expressed appreciation for France's steadfast position on the Cyprus problem and detailed efforts to resume negotiations for a comprehensive settlement.
On his part, President Macron lauded the agreement as a testament to France's trusted partnership with Cyprus. He emphasized the importance of their security and defense cooperation, noting the strategic significance of Cyprus in the Middle East. Macron also expressed gratitude for Cyprus's assistance in evacuating French nationals from the region.
President Macron reiterated France's support for UN-led mediation efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue and praised recent trilateral meetings aimed at resuming inter-Cypriot negotiations. He also expressed confidence in Cyprus's upcoming EU Presidency and pledged France's support in addressing European challenges, including security, competitiveness, and immigration.
