Polling Station for First Time in Brussels for Cypriot Parliamentary Elections

Brussels: At 12:00 Cyprus time, voter turnout at the Brussels polling station stood at 20%, with 116 people having voted out of 583 registered voters. This is the first time that Cypriot parliamentary elections are being held with a polling station in Brussels, as all previous election procedures there concerned Presidential elections and European Parliament elections.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the process is proceeding smoothly, and the Brussels ballot box is the only one that includes voters from all six districts: Nicosia, Famagusta, Limassol, Larnaca, Kyrenia, and Paphos. This means that six separate vote counts will take place after the end of the electoral process. The results will be announced from Nicosia, while all election material will be returned to Cyprus after the counting.

It is recalled that the one and only polling station in Belgium opened at 8:00 a.m. local time and will close at 5:00 p.m., with a break from 12:00 noon to 1:00 p.m. The polling station is operating at the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Cyprus to the European Union (Avenue de Cortenbergh 61, 1000 Brussels).

A high turnout is also expected, as citizens register for overseas voting on their own initiative and therefore, barring unforeseen circumstances, usually come to vote.

Specifically, 581 voters registered, while two additional voters are included under the Nicosia electoral roll, bringing its total to 281, as they are staff members who transported the election material to Brussels and will also be responsible for the vote count. The remaining registered voters are distributed as follows: 112 from Famagusta, 78 from Limassol, 43 from Larnaca, 34 from Paphos, and 35 from Kyrenia.
