Leaders of Jordan, Cyprus, and Greece Commit to Enhanced Trilateral Cooperation

Amman: The leaders of Jordan, Cyprus, and Greece have underscored the need to elevate their trilateral cooperation to more effective levels, aiming to bolster their collective capability to tackle regional challenges and advance their respective national interests.

According to Cyprus News Agency, King Abdullah II of Jordan, President Nikos Christodoulides of Cyprus, and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis of Greece convened in Amman for the 5th Trilateral Summit. This meeting, part of the trilateral mechanism framework, aimed to evaluate their partnership's trajectory since the previous summit in Nicosia in November 2024.

In a Joint Declaration, the leaders acknowledged the complex international and regional landscape, emphasizing the importance of enhancing their cooperation to effectively address political, economic, and security challenges. The leaders expressed support for a just and comprehensive resolution to the Cyprus issue, advocating for a bicommunal, bizonal federation in line with international law and UN resolutions.

They stressed the cessation of unilateral actions inconsistent with UN resolutions and highlighted the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus's vital role. The leaders reiterated their commitment to UN-facilitated negotiations, emphasizing that resolving the Cyprus issue would significantly enhance regional peace and stability.

The summit participants expressed satisfaction with the progress in trilateral cooperation, committing to advancing institutional frameworks like the Permanent Secretariat in Nicosia. They aimed to enhance coordination and deliver tangible outcomes, particularly in trade, energy, investment, and culture sectors.

The leaders also focused on strategic areas such as supply chain resilience, trade route security, and transport infrastructure development to position the Eastern Mediterranean as a crucial hub linking Europe and the Arab region. They emphasized deepening cooperation in food and water security.

The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to principles underpinning their cooperation, including respect for international law, UN Charter principles, and peaceful dispute resolution. They addressed regional concerns, highlighting the need for de-escalation efforts in the Middle East and sustaining the ceasefire between the United States and Iran.

On Lebanon, they called for regional and international efforts to maintain the ceasefire and support Lebanese sovereignty. The leaders praised Jordan's humanitarian initiatives for Lebanon, including aid convoys and financial support.

Regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, they reiterated the importance of a two-state solution and condemned illegal Israeli measures undermining this goal. They emphasized upholding the status quo at Jerusalem's holy sites and supported the Hashemite Custodianship.

The leaders addressed the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, urging the implementation of US President Donald Trump's plan and UNSC Resolution 2803. They underlined the role of UNRWA in supporting Palestinian refugees.

On Syria, the leaders emphasized supporting the Syrian government's reconstruction efforts while maintaining Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity. They rejected separatist agendas and unilateral actions, urging Israel to withdraw from occupied Syrian territories.

They warned against declining support for Syrian refugees, emphasizing continued international assistance. Greece and Cyprus appreciated Jordan's role in hosting Syrian refugees.

The Joint Declaration acknowledged Cyprus's upcoming EU Presidency in 2026, expressing confidence in its ability to address regional and international challenges and support EU priorities.

The leaders welcomed the inauguration of the Cyprus Regional Aerial Firefighting Station, highlighting its significance for civil protection and disaster response in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Finally, they commended the progress since the 2018 launch of the trilateral mechanism, reaffirming their commitment to building a long-term strategic partnership for regional stability and prosperity. They agreed to hold the 6th Trilateral Summit in Greece next year.
