Athens: Greek Foreign Affairs Minister George Gerapetritis has reiterated Greece's commitment to supporting the efforts of United Nations Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres in resolving the longstanding Cyprus issue. The announcement was made during a meeting in Athens with Mara ngela Holgun Cu©llar, the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy for Cyprus.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Greek Foreign Affairs Ministry released a statement highlighting the importance of sustaining the momentum achieved over the past two years in addressing the Cyprus issue. Gerapetritis reaffirmed Greece's backing for a comprehensive, just, and viable solution, in line with relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
The Greek Foreign Minister also expressed Greece's readiness to work constructively with the Republic of Cyprus to advance the negotiation process. The aim is to restart discussions based on the previously agreed framework under the UN's guidance.
Holgun's visit to Athens is part of a series of engagements following her meetings with the President of the Republic of Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot leader. Cyprus has remained divided since 1974 after Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern region. Despite numerous UN-led peace talks, a resolution has remained elusive, partly due to Turkish intransigence. The last significant negotiation effort took place in 2017 in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, but ended without agreement.
In 2025, the UN Secretary-General hosted two informal meetings on Cyprus, one in March in Geneva and another in July in New York. A tripartite meeting with Cypriot leaders was also held in September during the UN General Assembly High Level Week. An anticipated broader informal meeting is still pending announcement. The ongoing mission of Mara ngela Holgun is to facilitate engagement among the parties involved.
