G7 Leaders Urge Coordinated Response to Ebola Outbreak in Congo and Uganda

Brussels: G7 leaders recently emphasized the necessity for a unified global response to address the 'Bundibugyo' Ebola outbreak affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda, urging for robust international collaboration. The European Commission has bolstered its support with £493 million dedicated to humanitarian aid and health security. This funding encompasses immediate medical intervention, humanitarian assistance in the Great Lakes region and Uganda, research on vaccines and treatments for filoviruses, and long-term initiatives to enhance health preparedness and systems.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Commission's efforts have been coordinated from the onset with Member States, international organizations, and partners, prioritizing public health protection. President Ursula von der Leyen highlighted the importance of shared health security, advocating for collaborative action to safeguard citizens. Commissioner for Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib reiterated the EU's commitment to standing by those affected by Ebola, underscoring the necessity of trust, solidarity, political dedication, and coordinated action to manage the outbreak effectively.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control considers the risk to people in Europe as very low, while the Commission maintains vigilant monitoring of the outbreak in collaboration with its partners. Weekly meetings of the Health Security Committee continue to ensure the protection of European citizens through coordinated response strategies.
