George Vassiliou Remembered as a Distinguished Leader and Visionary

Nicosia: President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, described the third President of Cyprus, George Vassiliou, as a distinguished, virtuous and beneficial man, a cosmopolitan and universal figure, free by nature, non-dogmatic and consistent with his beliefs, delivering a eulogy in his funeral at the Holy Wisdom Church, in Nicosia, on Saturday.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides emphasized Vassiliou's significant impact on the modern history of Cyprus, Greece, and Europe. Vassiliou's journey began in Famagusta in 1931 and spanned various global locations, shaping him as a person, economist, technocrat, and politician. Despite his numerous roles, he remained grounded in the essence of life, focusing on value systems and needs beyond color, race, religion, ideology, or social background.

President Christodoulides highlighted Vassiliou's cosmopolitan nature, which enabled him to engage comfortably in diverse environments worldwide. His sound judgment and quick wit were instrumental in his ability to innovate and implement forward-thinking solutions. Vassiliou prioritized the resolution of the Cyprus problem and worked tirelessly towards reunification, a goal that remained unachieved at his passing.

Vassiliou's contributions to state modernization were substantial, marked by reforms in tax, public administration, and education, which fostered economic and social development. His determination to implement necessary changes was acknowledged, despite resistance from those favoring inertia.

Vassiliou also played a crucial role in Cyprus' accession to the European Union. His efforts as both President and head of the accession negotiation team were pivotal in this national endeavor, reflecting his belief in Cyprus' future within a united Europe.

President Christodoulides concluded by acknowledging the universal recognition of Vassiliou's contributions across Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and beyond. He expressed gratitude and farewelled Vassiliou as a distinguished leader who propelled Cyprus forward.
