Geopolitical Aspects of Great Sea Interconnector Being Managed, Energy Minister Says

Nicosia: The geopolitical dimension of the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) electricity project is being handled, stated Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, George Papanastasiou, during a press session following the Standing Committee on Energy, Trade, Industry and Tourism meeting.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Minister emphasized that the project faces several challenges, including economic, technical, and geopolitical aspects. When asked about the current status of the GSI, Minister Papanastasiou mentioned that while technical and economic issues are resolvable, the geopolitical concerns are being managed and suggested leaving it at that.

The Great Sea Interconnector, previously known as the EuroAsia Interconnector, is a significant cross-border infrastructure project intended to connect the electricity grids of Cyprus and Greece through an undersea high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cable. The initial plan also proposed a connection with Israel, creating a strategic energy corridor between the Eastern Mediterranean and the European Union.
