Gender Mainstreaming A Strategic Necessity, Commissioner For Equality Says At Stockholm Conference

Stockholm: Gender mainstreaming is not just a policy tool, but a strategic necessity, said Commissioner for Gender Equality, Josie Christodoulou, addressing a conference entitled 'Gender Equality as a Democratic Force: Results, Progress and Future Cooperation', organised by the Swedish Gender Equality Agency, in Stockholm.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Office of the Commissioner for Gender Equality said in a press release that 'in her address, the Commissioner highlighted the crucial role of gender equality as a foundation for social justice, resilience, stability and protection of democracy itself.'

'Referring to the importance of gender mainstreaming in public policies and actions, the Commissioner stressed that this approach improves the effectiveness of policies, strengthens citizens' trust in institutions and contributes to better crisis management,' it added.

She then presented some important steps taken by Cyprus, most notably the recent Gender Mainstreaming Law, which establishes a comprehensive framework for the implementation of equality in all areas of governance. 'At the same time, she referred to the National Strategy for Gender Equality (2024-2026), which is implemented horizontally by all ministries and deputy ministries with the participation of social partners and civil society,' the press release noted.

The Commissioner listed specific policies and actions of the Government, among others, for the reconciliation of women's personal, family and professional lives, strengthening their participation in the labour market, promoting female leadership and entrepreneurship and combating gender-based violence.

Christodoulou noted that addressing online violence against girls is a priority of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) and listed important relevant actions that Cyprus is undertaking during the current semester.

Finally, she reaffirmed Cyprus's determination and commitment to work with the other EU member states to build a more inclusive, resilient and competitive Europe.
