Fire Erupts from Roadside Garbage Pile in Omodos Village: Fire Service on High Alert Amidst Extreme Temperatures in Limassol

Nicosia: A small pile of garbage near the roadside ignited a fire on Friday in Omodos village, situated in the mountainous Limassol region. Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis informed CNA that firefighting forces are on standby in the area. He urged the public to exercise caution, emphasizing that fires can start easily due to high temperatures.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Kettis stated that the Fire Service cannot provide further details on how the fire began. However, it appears the blaze originated from a small pile of garbage at the road’s edge. The fire consumed about one hectare of dry grass, wild vegetation, and debris, slightly affecting the yards of three houses.

The Fire Service remains on high alert due to extreme temperatures. Kettis highlighted the new orange warning issued by the Department of Meteorology, urging public vigilance during the weekend. He stressed the importance of immediate reporting to authorities for prompt action. Fire Service personnel are maintaining heightened alertness with patrols and observation posts.

In response to the orange-level warning, the Department of Labour Inspection has suspended all heavy and medium outdoor work from 12:00 to 16:00, including transportation of goods using two-wheeled vehicles, while the warning is in effect. This suspension applies to inland areas below 300 meters altitude and mountainous regions above 1,150 meters.

Additionally, the Civil Defence Force advised the public on preventive measures against the heatwave’s negative effects. Recommendations include avoiding unnecessary travel, wearing appropriate clothing, staying hydrated, and using air conditioning. The CDF also advised consulting a doctor for health issues and caring for vulnerable individuals.
