FinMin Stresses Cohesion Policy’s Role at GAC Meeting in Brussels

Brussels: The Minister of Finance of Cyprus, Makis Keravnos, emphasized the significance of the cohesion policy during the General Affairs Council meeting on Thursday in Brussels, highlighting its importance on the European Union's agenda and the Cyprus Presidency.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Keravnos expressed his pleasure in chairing the meeting, marking the first under Cyprus's Presidency. He noted that the Presidency's motto, "an autonomous Union, open to the world," aligns with the strategic goals of competitiveness and economic resilience, directly linked to cohesion policy. Keravnos pointed to the two main agenda items: the adoption of Council conclusions on cities and the mid-term review of the cohesion policy for 2021-2027.

Diplomatic sources indicate that discussions will focus on the future of European policy concerning cities and urban areas, addressing their role in economic, social, and territorial cohesion. The mid-term review will also assess incentives and flexibilities for the next programming period, aiming to align with EU strategic priorities amid economic and geopolitical shifts. Enhancing administrative capacity and support for regions, especially those with geographical challenges like the Union's eastern borders, will also be discussed.
