Brussels: In the coming days, the European Commission is set to unveil a comprehensive 'toolbox' of measures designed to address the ongoing energy crisis, Energy Commissioner Dan J¸rgensen announced during a press conference following the Council of Energy Ministers. Commissioner J¸rgensen highlighted the urgency of adopting these strategies, emphasizing that the crisis's repercussions will persist even if geopolitical tensions resolve swiftly.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the International Energy Agency's (IEA) proposed 10 measures are central to the Commission's plan. These measures focus on reducing energy demand as a critical strategy in mitigating the crisis. Key recommendations include reducing car usage, promoting remote work, strengthening public transport, and enforcing lower speed limits to encourage more efficient mobility. The IEA underscores that widespread implementation of these actions could significantly alleviate the global energy crisis's impact.
The IEA report further classifies activities by their energy intensity, with road transport contributing 45% to oil demand. The report's insights, described as the largest disruption in global oil supply history, call for governments worldwide to adopt proven measures. These include remote working, reducing highway speed limits, promoting public transport, alternating access for private cars, reducing congestion, and increasing eco-driving practices.
Commissioner J¸rgensen urged member states to view the IEA's 10-point plan as an inspirational framework, stressing that national conditions require tailored approaches. The forthcoming toolbox will encompass both immediate relief for households and businesses and long-term strategic tools. He emphasized learning from past crises while adapting to the current situation, which affects a broader range of products, particularly diesel and jet fuel.
