Brussels: The European Commission has revealed the 27 winners, representing each EU country, from the 716 schools that participated in the 'Juvenes Translatores' contest, an annual translation competition for 17-year-old students.
According to Cyprus News Agency, this year saw a participation of 3004 students, who translated texts between any two of the EU's 24 official languages. The contest featured language pairings such as Bulgarian-Greek, Danish-Czech, Irish-Spanish, and Croatian-Swedish, with English being a prominent choice.
For Cyprus, the winner is ataa Saa from e in eµess, whose winning translation was from English to Greek. st aaµp and a d also from e in eµess, received special mentions for their exceptional work. The official translators from the European Commission were responsible for selecting the winners and the 186 students who received special mentions.
The award ceremony is scheduled for 27 March 2026, where the young translators, along with their teachers and parents, will have the opportunity to experience how European Commission translators work on a daily basis. This visit will also serve as a meeting point for them to learn about the workings of the European Union.
Funded by the Erasmus+ programme, the 'Juvenes Translatores' contest is organized annually by the Commission's Directorate-General for Translation since 2007. The contest aims to promote translation and multilingualism and has been a pivotal experience for many participants. Some have pursued further studies in translation or have joined the Commission's translation department as trainees or full-time translators.
