EU-Jordan Summit in Amman Strengthens Strategic Partnership

Amman: The leaders of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and the European Union concluded their first EU-Jordan Summit in Amman, marking a significant milestone in EU-Jordan relations. The summit, held on January 8, 2026, emphasized the strategic and comprehensive partnership established a year ago and aimed to enhance cooperation for long-term stability, peace, and prosperity.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the summit underscored the commitment of both parties to uphold the principles of the United Nations Charter and promote a rules-based international order. The leaders condemned violations of international law and stressed the need for peaceful conflict resolutions. The adoption of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2803 and President Trump's Comprehensive Plan to End the Conflict in Gaza were welcomed, with calls for implementation in line with international principles. The summit reiterated the importance of a Two-State solution to the Middle East conflict and highlighted Jordan's humanitarian contributions.

The European Union commended Jordan's efforts in hosting refugees and affirmed continued support to Palestinian refugees. The leaders also expressed support for Lebanon's stability and reiterated the importance of respecting its sovereignty. The summit addressed the situation in Syria, emphasizing a Syrian-led transition free from foreign interference and highlighting the EU's support for Syria's socio-economic recovery.

On Ukraine, the summit reiterated the need for a comprehensive peace in line with international law. The EU expressed its commitment to supporting Jordan's economic resilience and reform agenda, announcing a EUR 3 billion support package. Plans for an EU-Jordan Investment Conference in 2026 were discussed to promote sustainable trade and investment.

The summit recognized the importance of political modernization in Jordan and pledged to enhance cooperation on human rights, good governance, and security matters. The EU and Jordan are set to launch their first Security and Defence Dialogue in 2026. Jordan's decision to join the Global Energy Transition Forum was welcomed, and both sides committed to accelerating the global green transition.

The summit concluded with a commitment to deepen cooperation in research, innovation, and vocational training, emphasizing inclusivity and social protection. The EU-Jordan partnership aims to unlock trade potential and enhance bilateral relations, with plans to hold the next summit in Brussels in 2028.
