Nicosia: The situation on Thursday seems to be better than the previous two days in terms of electricity demand coverage, the Cyprus Transmission System Operator said in a statement today. As noted, electricity demand is expected to be met between 18:30 and 22:00, thanks to the expected increase in the availability of production units by 16.7MW and the projected contribution of wind farms, therefore significantly reducing the likelihood of load shedding.
According to Cyprus News Agency, on Tuesday, August 12, and Wednesday, August 13, 2025, the National Energy Control Center proceeded with a controlled rotational power cut on a Cyprus-wide scale. As stated, this decision was deemed necessary due to the particularly high temperatures prevailing, which resulted in increased demand for electricity, combined with emergency failures at power plants.
It is added that the power cuts were carried out with the aim of safeguarding the safe and reliable operation of the electricity system, which is an absolute priority, with the maximum duration of the interruption for each group of consumers not exceeding 19 minutes. In the event of a new unexpected failure at a production unit or a deviation from the wind power forecast, which would make power cuts necessary, it is added.
Furthermore, in statements to CNA, EAC representative, Christina Papadopoulou, said that the increase in availability from production unit 3 at the Vasiliko power station, with an additional 30 MW of production since yesterday, Wednesday, will be maintained, as some production units remain out of service. She added that in emergency situations where there is a shortage of production and it is necessary to balance production with demand, the Cyprus Transmission System Operator may proceed with load shedding, with interruptions in supply taking place in order of priority, for a maximum duration of 30 minutes.
She also said that the consumer load shedding groups and the corresponding areas have been posted on the Authority’s website in English adding that these groups may be modified if required by the circumstances. Asked about the current production situation, Papadopoulou said that the situation is slightly better than in previous days as winds are stronger, with obvious benefits for wind power generation. In closing, she appealed to consumers to do everything possible to keep consumption at lower levels.
