Cyprus Tourism to Receive Boost as Flights from Israel Resume

Nicosia: Flights from Israel are set to resume next week, according to Christos Angelides, Director General of the Cyprus Hoteliers Association (CHA). This development is anticipated to provide a significant lift to Cyprus' tourism sector.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Angelides mentioned that the resumption of flights follows a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran, leading to an increase in flights to Cyprus from Israel. He emphasized the importance of this development, as Israel represents the second largest market for tourists visiting Cyprus.

Angelides discussed the current state of hotel occupancy, specifically in the government-controlled areas of Cyprus, with a particular focus on the Famagusta district. Surveys and feedback from CHA members revealed that April's performance in Protaras was weaker compared to other regions. He also projected lower occupancy rates for Protaras in the first half of May, though other districts were performing better.

Efforts are underway to secure the crucial tourist season from June to October, during which hotels typically see peak occupancy and the nation experiences a surge in tourist arrivals and revenue. Angelides noted the concerted efforts by the government and tourism stakeholders to reassure travelers of Cyprus' safety as a destination.

Emphasizing the need to maintain Cyprus' image as a safe and attractive tourist spot, Angelides highlighted the importance of ongoing efforts to promote the island as such. He pointed out the necessity of diversifying the tourism offerings beyond the traditional sun and sea attractions, suggesting a focus on sports tourism involving activities like cycling, football, and hiking.

He also noted a decline in football teams visiting Cyprus for training camps and advocated for more sports events during the off-peak months to enhance Cyprus' reputation as a hub for sporting events. Angelides mentioned the potential to develop events like the Limassol and Larnaca marathons into internationally recognized occasions.

Finally, he reiterated CHA's commitment to supporting its members for the betterment of Cyprus' hotel industry and the overall economy.
