Nicosia: European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited the buffer zone in the divided capital of Cyprus, Nicosia, and described it as a "moving visit" on her X account. She emphasized that a comprehensive, fair, and lasting settlement for Cyprus and all Cypriots remains an absolute priority for the European Union.
According to Cyprus News Agency, von der Leyen's visit to Cyprus is part of the College of the Commissioners' visit, as the island currently holds the EU Presidency. She was accompanied by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides. During her visit, von der Leyen explored an exhibition titled 'Cyprus Question' by the Press and Information Office and listened to Cypriot songs performed by a student choir from the Pancyprian High School. She also toured the walled city streets and interacted with local shopkeepers.
The President of the European Commission was joined by Titina Loizidou, a refugee from Kyrenia who successfully appealed against Turkey at the European Court of Human Rights concerning the deprivation of her property and right to return. The visit concluded with von der Leyen and her delegation, including President Christodoulides, enjoying coffee at a caf© near the historic Faneromeni church in the capital.
On her X account, von der Leyen reiterated her commitment to the Cyprus settlement, expressing hope that 2026 would bring new momentum towards the reunification of Cyprus. Her visit was further supported by FM Constantinos Kombos, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna, and Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis.
