Cyprus President Unable to Attend Board of Peace Signing Ceremony in Davos

Nicosia: President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, was unable to attend the Board of Peace signing ceremony in Davos on Thursday due to 'practical reasons', stated Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos. Efforts are currently underway in Brussels to establish a common approach to broader participation in the Board of Peace.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Republic of Cyprus supports initiatives by US President Donald Trump related to the peace process in Gaza. Kombos emphasized that any efforts aimed at strengthening peacebuilding and resolving disputes should align with international law and the Charter of the United Nations.

Addressing the media after a Cabinet meeting at the Presidential Palace, Kombos expressed Nicosia's gratitude to the US President for the invitation to a select group of invitees. He elaborated on the protocol matters, mentioning that an invitation was received at a later stage for the President of the Republic to attend the ceremony in Davos. However, due to other commitments, President Christodoulides was unable to participate.

The Minister reiterated Cyprus's support for peacebuilding efforts, emphasizing adherence to international law and the UN Charter. He highlighted ongoing support for President Trump's initiatives regarding the Gaza peace process, noting Cyprus's previous engagement in Sharm el-Sheikh and the recent announcements about the second phase of the Gaza peace process.

Kombos clarified that the Board of Peace's initial focus was on the Gaza issue, which had been addressed at the UN Security Council through Resolution 2803. Cyprus views this development positively and continues discussions with the US and other friendly nations, particularly within Europe.

Efforts to expand participation in the Board of Peace are ongoing in Brussels, according to Kombos. He assured that Nicosia's position has been communicated to the US.

Despite subsequent developments, including those concerning Greenland, Kombos stated that the significance of the invitation remains undiminished. He emphasized Cyprus's careful and balanced approach to managing complex issues, highlighting it as evidence of the country's successful efforts to enhance its international status.

Additionally, Kombos mentioned that President Christodoulides would travel to Brussels on Thursday to attend an extraordinary European Council meeting focused on recent geopolitical and geostrategic developments.
