Cyprus President Sets Out for Strategic Working Visit to Kyiv

Nicosia: Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides sets off for Kyiv on Wednesday as part of a working visit in preparation for Cyprus’ Presidency of the Council of the European Union. He is scheduled to arrive in Kyiv on Thursday.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the visit occurs during a critical time for Ukraine and underscores Cyprus’ commitment to advancing European priorities and supporting Ukraine. During a meeting with Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, President Christodoulides will reiterate Cyprus’ commitment to international law and respect for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. Discussions will cover the main priorities for the upcoming Cyprus Presidency of the EU Council, which will emphasize the Ukrainian issue.

The announcement also highlights the importance of addressing the circumvention of sanctions and enhancing the international sanctions framework through common stances and transparency.

Upon arriving in Kyiv, President Christodoulides will lay a wreath at the Wall of Remembrance of the Fallen for Ukraine, alongside President Zelenskyy. The two leaders will engage in a meeting followed by expanded talks at the Presidential Palace, focusing on EU-Ukraine relations and the country’s accession negotiations. They will also address the media and partake in a working lunch.

Later, President Christodoulides will meet with Speaker Ruslan Stefanchuk at the Ukrainian Parliament, reinforcing the institutional relationship between Cyprus and Ukraine. He will also visit a Special Rehabilitation Centre for children affected by abduction and captivity, highlighting Cyprus’ humanitarian stance towards the war.

Before concluding the visit, President Christodoulides will tour Saint Sophia Cathedral, a significant monument of Orthodox tradition and cultural heritage.

Accompanying the President are Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna, Director of the President’s Diplomatic Office Doros Venezis, and other officials.
