Brussels: Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, emphasized the importance of decision-making on key issues as he arrived at the European Council meeting, noting that Ukraine would be central to the discussions. He expressed hope for increased unity among EU members by the end of the meeting.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides highlighted Cyprus's readiness to take on the EU Presidency, focusing on strategic autonomy, enhancing relations with the Middle East, and addressing challenges faced by European citizens. He noted that these discussions would be crucial as they align with the strategic autonomy goals for the upcoming Cyprus Presidency.
Christodoulides outlined three main objectives: strengthening the EU's strategic autonomy, fostering closer ties with Middle Eastern countries, and addressing significant citizen challenges such as housing and energy costs. The President emphasized the necessity of economic support for Ukraine to address challenges from the Russian invasion, ensuring that EU financial assistance is used appropriately.
In response to questions, President Christodoulides insisted that the meeting aimed for consensus rather than targeting specific countries like Belgium. He also welcomed the appointment of Johannes Hahn as the Personal Envoy for Cyprus, highlighting this as a significant development for EU-Cyprus relations.
Regarding Turkey, Christodoulides noted the importance of references to the Cyprus problem and resolutions on Famagusta. He also welcomed the European Commission's letter on migration, praising Cyprus's progress towards Schengen membership and its efforts in managing migration flows.
Christodoulides shared insights on sanctions against Russia and Iran, underscoring the need for their effective implementation. He also mentioned the EU's enlargement as a priority, with plans to advance this goal, particularly regarding Montenegro and Moldova.
Addressing agricultural policies, Christodoulides stressed the importance of the Multiannual Financial Framework in supporting sectors like agriculture. He indicated that discussions on budget priorities, including defense, security, and competitiveness, would be crucial during Cyprus's presidency, with a goal to finalize a political agreement by 2026.
The backdrop of Cyprus's division since 1974 and unresolved peace talks underscores the significance of these discussions. The European Council meeting is viewed as an opportunity to address long-standing issues and strengthen EU unity and strategic autonomy.
