Cyprus Prepares for 2026 European Maritime Day

Limassol: The official handover ceremony for the hosting of the European Maritime Day (EMD) 2026 took place in Cork, Ireland, during the closing ceremony of this year’s celebrations, attended by European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans Costas Kadis. Cyprus was represented by the Mayor of Limassol and officials from the Shipping Deputy Ministry.

According to Cyprus News Agency, a press release by the Shipping Deputy Ministry stated that EMD 2026, organized by the Republic of Cyprus, is scheduled for May 21 and 22, 2026, coinciding with the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Limassol will be the focal point of the celebrations, with additional events planned in other coastal cities across Cyprus. Preparations are in progress in collaboration with the European Commission to ensure a seamless event that highlights Cyprus’ maritime identity and European vision.

The coordination of EMD 2026 is managed by the Shipping Deputy Ministry, working alongside other relevant ministries, local authorities, and stakeholders from the blue economy sectors. European Maritime Day serves as the EU’s primary annual event for the marine and maritime community, as well as stakeholders involved in the blue economy.

Cyprus, a maritime nation and island state with a rich nautical tradition, takes pride in hosting the event in Limassol-a city known for its blue growth, innovation, and European cooperation. EMD 2026 is expected to foster open dialogue, idea exchange, and the promotion of collective action towards the sustainable development of oceans and the blue economy.
