Nicosia: The Republic of Cyprus is fully prepared to take over the Presidency of the Council of the European Union on January 1, 2026, President Nikos Christodoulides emphasized following a visit to the Filoxenia Conference Center in Nicosia, designated to host many of the Presidency's events and activities.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides declared that a successful Presidency would underscore Cyprus's significance within the EU, aligning with the goals of enhancing European autonomy and fostering an open European Union. During his remarks, he expressed gratitude to all contributors, specifically acknowledging the efforts of Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna, the Ministry of Transport, and the Ministry of Justice and Public Order, for their crucial roles in ensuring organizational readiness.
President Christodoulides highlighted Cyprus's commitment to achieving tangible results during its six-month tenure, focusing on European autonomy and international openness in cooperation with EU member states and institutions. The upcoming Presidency coincides with critical European Union developments, such as managing legislative dossiers, including the Multiannual Financial Framework, and addressing ongoing geopolitical concerns like the situation in Ukraine.
Defence and security, EU competitiveness, migration, and daily life issues such as housing and internet safety are priority areas for the Cyprus Presidency. These efforts aim to bolster the EU's autonomy through deeper integration. President Christodoulides affirmed that Cyprus is prepared to manage its institutional role responsibly, particularly in light of concerns about its relations with Turkey, treating Turkey as a candidate for EU accession.
Regarding upcoming events, President Christodoulides mentioned the scheduling for an informal EU Summit in April and the potential for a focused meeting on Ukraine, reflecting Cyprus's proactive stance on international issues. Strengthening EU relations with the Middle East is also a priority, with regional leaders invited to the informal European Council meeting in April.
The possibility of inviting Pope Leo XIV during the Presidency was discussed, highlighting ongoing bilateral exchanges and potential initiatives in collaboration with EU leaders. Addressing financial aid to Ukraine, President Christodoulides clarified that the aid would originate from the existing EU budget.
The official opening ceremony of the Cyprus Presidency is set for January 7 at the Cyprus Theatre Organisation premises, aiming to showcase Cyprus's cultural heritage and its role as a bridge between the Eastern Mediterranean and the EU. The event will feature participation from foreign leaders, with specific attendees to be announced in due course.
