Nicosia: In 2026, Cyprus will not only communicate through institutional positions but will also express itself through art, said Deputy Minister for Culture, Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou, at the presentation of the Cultural Programme of the Cyprus EU Presidency in Nicosia. More than 500 artists and cultural professionals are involved in this initiative, which has a total budget of £4.4 million.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Cultural Programme during the first half of 2026 is described as one of the most significant projects of the Deputy Ministry for Culture. Dr. Kassianidou emphasized that this programme is a strategic investment in Cypriot culture, showcasing Cyprus as a country with a rich cultural heritage. The programme aims to promote Cyprus' cultural legacy as part of European and Mediterranean history and to support contemporary Cypriot creation.
The programme is designed to enhance Cyprus' presidency of the EU, aligning with a vision for a more resilient and culturally unified Europe. It focuses on integrating research and innovation into cultural actions and strengthening Cyprus' international cultural presence.
A notable event is the Opening Ceremony of the Cyprus Presidency on January 7, 2026, in Nicosia, featuring a multi-layered artistic performance directed by Kostas Silvestros. This performance, involving over 100 Cypriot artists, will narrate Cyprus' history and emphasize its cultural ties with Europe.
The programme also has an international dimension, with cultural actions planned in 31 countries. Emblematic events will take place in Belgium, France, Germany, and other nations, featuring exhibitions, theatre performances, and concerts. A gala in Brussels and a concert by composer Stavros Lantsias are highlights of these international efforts.
In Cyprus, the programme includes upgrades to the Cyprus Museum and showcases of modern Cypriot art at the 'Filoxenia' Conference Center in Nicosia. Additionally, art from the State Collection will be displayed at Larnaca International Airport.
The programme will also feature productions by the Cyprus Theatre Organization and the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra, conveying a message of culture as a realm of dialogue and peaceful coexistence. Dr. Kassianidou concluded that Cyprus' cultural programme will tell the story of its rich history and heritage, deserving recognition in Europe.
