Nicosia: The House of Representatives of Cyprus has unanimously condemned, through a resolution it adopted, the attacks against the Kurdish people in Rojava, describing them as genocidal actions that constitute serious violations of international humanitarian law and have led to civilian casualties, population displacement, and the destabilisation of the region.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Parliament recognises the decisive role played by the Kurds in the fight against the Islamic State in Syria and expresses grave concern over the release of thousands of detained ISIS members from the Al-Hol prisons, which until recently had been guarded by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
At the same time, solidarity is expressed with the Kurdish people, the Christian populations, and the Alevis affected by the attacks, as well as with all democratic forces facing persecution. The House of Representatives stresses that the ongoing attacks in northeastern Syria, carried out by armed militias supported by the Erdogan regime and forces of the interim government in Damascus, constitute flagrant violations of international law.
Through the resolution, the Republic of Cyprus, in its capacity as the presiding country of the Council of the European Union, is called upon to immediately raise the issue before the competent European bodies. Simultaneously, the EU and its member states are urged to take immediate and substantive political and condemnatory action, including the possible suspension of financial funding, with the aim of ending the attacks and protecting civilians.
Finally, the resolution underlines the need for international accountability and the investigation of all allegations of war crimes and crimes against humanity, calling on the United Nations to take immediate initiatives to ensure unhindered, safe, and continuous humanitarian access to Rojava, with particular emphasis on safeguarding food supply routes.
