Nicosia: Cyprus has emerged as the European Union leader in energy consumption for space cooling by households in 2024, as revealed by recent data from Eurostat. The Mediterranean island's households used a total of 1,925 terajoules for space cooling, representing a significant 16.0% of their final energy consumption.
According to Cyprus News Agency, these figures highlight Cyprus's significant reliance on energy-intensive cooling solutions, outpacing all other EU nations. Malta came in second place, with 15.0% of household energy consumption channeled towards space cooling.
The data further indicates that Greece recorded 7.4% of its household energy consumption for the same purpose, while Spain and Italy reported even lower figures of 2.5% and 2.3%, respectively. This trend underscores a growing demand for cooling energy across the EU, with total household consumption reaching 80.4 thousand terajoules in 2024.
