Nicosia: Cyprus recorded the lowest suicide mortality rate among EU member states in 2023, at 3.5 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, according to data published by Eurostat on Wednesday. According to Cyprus News Agency, after Cyprus, the lowest rates were recorded in Greece, at 4.3 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, and Malta, at 5.5. At the other end of the scale, the highest rate was recorded in Lithuania, at 18.8 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Slovenia at 16.4 and Hungary at 16.1. Overall, 48,370 EU residents died as a result of intentional self-harm in 2023, accounting for 1% of all deaths in the Union. The standardised suicide mortality rate stood at 10.4 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, down from 10.6 in 2022 and 12.2 in 2013. According to Eurostat, the data indicate a decline in the rate, both compared with the previous year and over the longer term.
