Nicosia: Progress in EU-Turkey relations remains closely tied to advancements on the Cyprus issue, and the convening of an informal multilateral conference is contingent on Ankara's approach, Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated, commenting on discussions between European leaders and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, had a phone conversation on Tuesday with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, with plans underway for a meeting next week to comprehensively evaluate developments. Letymbiotis emphasized that the Greek Cypriot side is prepared for the informal conference to be convened, aiming to announce the resumption of negotiations, contingent on Turkey demonstrating a constructive stance.
The Government Spokesman further noted that linking Turkey's Cyprus-related obligations is a necessary precondition for EU-Turkey progress, as recorded in the Conclusions of the European Council. The Cyprus issue remains central to discussions because of its significance for EU-Turkey relations.
Letymbiotis mentioned that Nicosia is closely monitoring reports of the United States potentially selling F-35 fighter jets to Turkey, highlighting the geopolitical concerns surrounding Turkey's actions and aspirations in the region. He stressed the importance of upholding international law and the strategic partnership with the United States.
Addressing an incident involving an attack on a Turkish Cypriot in government-controlled areas, Letymbiotis rejected claims of nationalist motives, emphasizing the importance of peaceful coexistence between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974 due to Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern third. Despite numerous UN-led peace talks, a resolution has not been achieved due to Turkish intransigence. Deliberations are ongoing for a new meeting in a broader format as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' term approaches its end, with Mara Angela Holgun tasked to engage with the parties.
