Nicosia: Cyprus-U.S. relations have, in recent years, gained new depth, new momentum, and new prospects, with progress continuing, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis stated on Wednesday. This announcement followed a working lunch in Nicosia with a bipartisan delegation of professional staff members from the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Letymbiotis shared on X that Cyprus-U.S. relations were the focal point of discussions during the working lunch with the U.S. delegation. He emphasized the significance of the Strategic Dialogue, strengthened defense cooperation, growing investment, and expanding economic ties between the two nations. These elements are not only milestones in the advancing relationship but also serve as a foundation for further achievements.

Letymbiotis highlighted the potential benefits of the Eastern Mediterranean Gateway Act and ITAR, which could deepen the strategic partnership between Cyprus and the U.S. He also touched on discussions regarding the Cyprus Issue, expressing hope for a reunified Cyprus that could enhance the region's security, stability, and cooperation. He acknowledged the invaluable bipartisan support Nicosia receives from Congress, noting the progress made and the opportunities that lie ahead.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern third. Despite multiple rounds of UN-led peace talks, a resolution remains elusive. The most recent negotiations, held in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana, ended without a conclusive agreement.
