Nicosia: An international flotilla en route to Gaza did not enter the territorial waters of the Republic of Cyprus, the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) confirmed on Monday. The Center reported that there was no distress signal received that would necessitate the activation of search and rescue operations under the national "NEARCHOS" plan.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the JRCC emphasized that Cyprus consistently acts with responsibility and respect for international law, including the Law of the Sea, along with the obligations it entails. The flotilla, which set out with Gaza as its destination, remained in international waters, approximately 90 nautical miles away from Cyprus.
The JRCC asserted that it diligently investigates all information and strictly follows procedures outlined in the "NEARCHOS" plan. This plan coordinates Cyprus's search and rescue missions, crucial for saving lives during maritime or aviation emergencies.
Currently, the Center stated that no distress signals have been received that would trigger the need for search and rescue activities. "In the event of receiving a distress signal concerning a maritime accident, the JRCC will respond in accordance with its international obligations," the statement concluded.
