Nicosia: The Republic of Cyprus continues to assert its position as a stable pillar for security and humanitarian efforts in the region, as emphasized by Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis. This statement followed an extraordinary meeting of the National Security Council chaired by President Nikos Christodoulides.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the meeting involved a detailed assessment of the ongoing developments in the Middle East. Letymbiotis highlighted that no incidents of missiles targeting Cyprus had been reported, and all existing protocols and procedures were thoroughly examined. The council discussed regional stability, evaluated humanitarian needs, and reviewed security measures, which have already been enhanced and continue to be implemented.
Letymbiotis emphasized ongoing diplomatic engagements, stating that Cyprus is in constant communication with EU partners and regional countries. The President has been actively engaging with various leaders, including those from the European Commission, European Council, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom, Lebanon, France, and Italy. The Foreign Affairs Minister also attended an extraordinary EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting to address recent regional developments.
The Republic of Cyprus aims to maintain its humanitarian role in the region, leveraging its geographical position and operational capabilities. Past regional crises have seen Cyprus facilitate humanitarian operations, including the safe evacuation of civilians. Letymbiotis affirmed that any request for humanitarian aid would be considered with responsibility and a positive outlook.
Addressing the increased security measures, Letymbiotis explained that protocols were activated at specific points as required. Measures at critical infrastructure sites, including airports, have been enhanced to support Cyprus's humanitarian role.
The government continues to exchange information and views with international partners, focusing on regional security, crisis de-escalation, and humanitarian efforts. While no official requests for citizen evacuation under the ESTIA plan have been received, Cyprus remains prepared to activate it if necessary.
Regarding concerns about missile threats, Letymbiotis reiterated that there had been no incidents targeting Cyprus, a clarification supported by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Cyprus remains vigilant, taking all necessary precautions to ensure regional safety and security.
