Nicosia: The Republic of Cyprus, an EU member state since 2004, assumed Thursday its second EU Presidency, taking the helm under the motto 'An Autonomous Union. Open to the World.' For the next six months, Cyprus will lead the European Union from its strategically significant position in the southeasternmost corner of the continent, marking a pivotal moment for the island nation that remains the last divided and occupied member state of the EU.
According to Cyprus News Agency, this presidency marks the second occasion Cyprus has taken on this role, with the first being in 2012-a milestone for the small nation. Now, more mature and with a significant impact on both European and international stages, Cyprus is set to promote unity and strength through its leadership. The opening ceremony, scheduled for January 7th at the THOC Theater in Nicosia, will feature a modern artistic performance directed by Costas Silvestros, showcasing Cyprus's rich history and culture as an integral part of Europe.
President Nikos Christodoulides conveyed through the Cyprus News Agency that the presidency is being approached with a deep sense of responsibility and commitment to the European vision. He emphasized Cyprus's readiness to lead the EU with honesty and credibility, aiming to bridge differences and further European integration. The presidency will focus on five interrelated pillars including security, competitiveness, and a long-term budget for an autonomous union.
Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna highlighted the presidency as a moment of pride and strategic opportunity for Cyprus. She noted the importance of acting as a reliable mediator and leading crucial negotiations during a time of geopolitical changes. The presidency will also focus on strengthening the EU's geopolitical stance, energy security, and strategic autonomy.
The Cyprus Presidency will prioritize initiatives in security and defense, supporting the implementation of the EU Maritime Security Strategy, and managing migration effectively. It will also pursue strengthening the rule of law, affordable housing, child protection, and advancing the enlargement agenda, with Ukraine as a key focus.
During its presidency, Cyprus will host numerous meetings and conferences, including 260 events in Cyprus, allowing international guests to experience the island's culture and history. Security plans have been put in place to ensure the safety of all delegates.
The presidency's logo, inspired by Lefkara embroidery, symbolizes harmony and unity, reflecting Cyprus's distinct identity within the EU. As Cyprus continues its journey towards joining the Schengen area, it looks forward to contributing significantly to the EU's future.
