Cyprus: Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi reaffirmed in Cairo on Monday their commitment to further deepening the strategic relationship between Cyprus and Egypt, with emphasis on the commercial development of hydrocarbons and the advancement of the Eastern Mediterranean energy corridor, according to a written statement by the Director of the President's Press Office, Victor Papadopoulos.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the bilateral meeting took place on the sidelines of 'EGYPES 2026', which is a leading energy conference and exhibition for Egypt, North Africa and the Mediterranean. During the meeting, the two leaders expressed satisfaction over the signing of the Framework Agreement between Cyprus and Egypt on the commercial development of hydrocarbons, describing it as a tangible step that can help accelerate and complete pending energy agreements concerning the development of the Cypriot 'Aphrodite' and 'Cronos' fields.
They also reaffirmed their strong commitment to the timely commercial development of the Eastern Mediterranean energy corridor, with a view to strengthening regional and European energy security, especially under the current geopolitical circumstances. The meeting also included an exchange of views and coordination on regional developments and energy security.
The role that the Republic of Cyprus, as the country holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, can play in promoting priorities of common interest to Egypt was also discussed. According to the statement, the discussion also took into account that the next Cyprus-Greece-Egypt Trilateral Summit, as well as the Cyprus-Egypt Intergovernmental Summit, are due to take place in Cyprus soon.
