Cypriot Film “Motherwitch” to Be Featured at 2026 Rotterdam Film Festival

Nicosia: Cypriot feature film "Motherwitch", directed by Emmy-winning Minos Papas, is set to be showcased at the Rotterdam International Film Festival (IFFR) in 2026, as announced by the Deputy Ministry of Culture on Saturday. The film marks Papas' third venture into fiction and is anticipated to captivate audiences with its unique narrative and cultural depth.

According to Cyprus News Agency, "Motherwitch" is produced by Caretta Films and is a co-production involving Cyprus, the USA, and North Macedonia. The film was shot entirely in Cyprus, capturing the essence of the island's authentic locations, with the support of the Deputy Ministry of Culture and the Film Agency of North Macedonia.

The storyline follows Eleni, a painter, who in her attempt to resurrect her deceased children, inadvertently releases the Kalikantzari-mythical creatures from Cypriot folklore that emerge during the Twelve Days of Christmas-into her village. The narrative centers on Eleni's journey to restore natural order by embracing motherhood for a talented yet mistreated boy.

Director Minos Papas describes "Motherwitch" as a tribute to Cyprus, celebrating its folklore, language, and history. He explains that the film is a fairy tale exploring themes of parenthood, mourning, and the human struggle with grief and loss. Papas aims to depict a magical tale of creativity versus anger, highlighting the delicate, creative child within everyone.
