Construction Works Begin for EU-Funded Pedieos River Rehabilitation Project in Nicosia

Nicosia: Construction works for the first phase of the Pedieos River/Kanlidere Rehabilitation Project, funded by the European Union under the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community, have commenced, as announced by the European Commission.

According to Cyprus News Agency, this initiative, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), marks the beginning of significant developments aimed at improving public space, enhancing access to nature, and increasing connectivity around the river flowing through Nicosia. This initial phase covers 1.2 kilometers and includes the construction of a two-way bicycle lane, a sidewalk, and a green belt that will form an access route leading towards the river. Construction began at the end of November 2025 and is expected to conclude by the end of February 2026. Upon completion, this segment of the project will provide safer and more comfortable paths for walking and cycling, integrating into the broader rehabilitation area.

This effort is part of a more extensive EU-funded plan to establish a 3.7-kilometer linear park in northern Nicosia, aiming to connect with the southern parts of the city through the Ledra Palace crossing. The project is designed to offer more recreational spaces, improve the natural environment along the river, and facilitate shared public areas that encourage daily interactions. By bringing communities together, it supports ongoing peacebuilding and reconciliation efforts in Cyprus.

The Pedieos River/Kanlidere rehabilitation project is built on comprehensive preparatory work, including a feasibility study conducted by the European Commission between 2018 and 2019. The design was finalized by UNDP in September 2024, incorporating findings from environmental studies and contributions from various stakeholders. This investment by the European Union aims to restore the river environment, bolster local biodiversity, and support a more sustainable and connected urban landscape, fostering trust through enhanced shared spaces.

The Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community, based on Council Regulation 389/2006, seeks to facilitate the reunification of Cyprus by promoting the economic development of the Turkish Cypriot community. It emphasizes economic integration of the island, improving contacts between the two communities and with the EU, and preparing for the EU body of laws, known as acquis communautaire.
