Nicosia: Commissioner for Economy and Productivity, Valdis Dombrovskis, carried out on-site visits to projects being implemented under the Cyprus Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP). The visits took place on the sidelines of the informal ECOFIN ministerial meeting, which was organised in Nicosia within the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU).
According to Cyprus News Agency, a joint press release from the General Directorate of Development and the Secretariat of the Cyprus Presidency of the EU Council 2026, noted that Commissioner Dombrovskis was accompanied by Finance Minister Makis Keravnos and Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides. The visit occurs at a critical time for the implementation of the RRP, which is entering its final completion phase, with all projects expected to be completed by August 2026.
Dombrovskis first visited Nicosia General Hospital, where he was briefed on the installation of photovoltaic systems costing pound 1.3 million. This project is part of a broader investment of approximately pound 10 million aimed at the energy upgrade of public buildings across Cyprus.
He also toured the Hospital's Diagnostic Imaging Center, which has been enhanced with a funding of pound 2.17 million. This initiative is part of a larger effort to upgrade Cyprus's public hospitals, with total investments of pound 87 million under the RRP.
The Commissioner also visited the new Cyprus Blood Center in Yeri, constructed with pound 6.2 million from the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism. This funding substantially aids in enhancing the quality and independence of the national blood donation system.
According to the press release, Finance Minister Keravnos highlighted that the health sector has been significantly bolstered through the RRP, with pound 114 million in investments improving the effectiveness, accessibility, and resilience of the health system. This is achieved through modernized infrastructure and equipment in both public and private hospitals, expanded e-health services, and upgraded human resource skills.
The total RRP budget amounts to pound 1.02 billion, with many investments already completed and the remaining ones nearing final implementation. Nearly all legislative reforms have been approved by the House of Representatives.
To date, Cyprus has received pound 589 million from the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism, with an additional pound 118 million pending disbursement as part of the last payment request, expected to increase the absorption rate to about 70%.
