Chief Scientist Highlights Cyprus’ Position as Innovation Hub in UAE Visit

Dubai: The Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation and Technology, Demetris Skourides, highlighted Cyprus’ position as a progressive hub for Artificial Intelligence, advanced technology, and the development of an innovation-based economy, during a high-level visit to the United Arab Emirates.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the visit formed part of Cyprus’ broader strategy under Vision 2035 to foster cross-border partnerships, attract international investment, and accelerate the global competitiveness of Cyprus’ research and innovation ecosystem. Throughout the trip, the Chief Scientist engaged with government leaders, startup founders, institutional stakeholders, and investors, underlining Cyprus’ commitment to becoming a launchpad for regional collaboration and technological leadership.

As noted, the Cypriot government delegation was invited under the courtesy of H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum for the signing of an MoU between Dubai Silicon Oasis and Doers Cyprus Festival, which will see the expansion of the Cypriot-born Reflect Festival to Dubai Silicon Oasis. The signing ceremony took place at Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO) under the auspices of the Dubai Integrated Economic Zones Authority (DIEZ).

The MoU was signed between Stylianos Lambrou, Dusan Duffek, and Badr Buhannad, while notable attendees included Dr. Juma Al Matrooshi, Dr. Constantinos Kleovoulou, and George Partasides. The Chief Scientist also witnessed the signing of another MoU involving Avinash Mudaliar and The Doers Company Co-Founders, setting the foundation for tri-nation collaboration between Cyprus, the UAE, and India in AI, digital infrastructure, and entrepreneurship.

During his visit, Skourides met with leaders of pioneering companies and institutions in Dubai Silicon Oasis. These included Ralph Debbas of W Motors, Hans Christensen of Dtec, and Mustafa Al Hariri of Rochester Institute of Technology – Dubai, among others. Discussions centered on the application of AI, sustainable solutions, and talent development in emerging technologies.

The Chief Scientist also held meetings with Dr. Marwan Al Zarouni and emerging tech companies like DistiChain and Datanuum, discussing AI adoption and blockchain solutions. Further engagements included global and regional venture capital funds like Oraseya Capital, and bilateral talks with Dr. Waddah S. Ghanem Al Hashmi on responsible innovation across various sectors.

To conclude the visit, Skourides participated in a podcast hosted by Anton Golub and Dr. Demetrios Zamboglou, sharing insights into Cyprus’ evolving national AI strategy and its ambition to serve as a regional gateway for innovation and emerging technologies.
